The Ralph Rant

The Politically Correct Ranger – Episode #5
Ralph Bristol
July 30, 2004

A Silver Bike with the speed of molasses, a cloud without dust and a hearty Slow Down Silver – the PC Ranger. With his faithful nondescript companion Nonto, the daring and resourceful masked rider in the bicycle lane of life leads the fight for political correctness in the 21st century.  Come with us now to the thrilling days of tomorrow --- the PC Ranger rides again.

Our hero begins his week the UK, posing as an animal rights activist, and seeking to cancel the performance of a Spanish folk dance at a festival in Kent. Protesters say the aluminum bulls and swordless dancer glorify a sport they consider gruesome. Ivan Darch of PETA likened the show to staging a mock rape.

While touring the UK, the PC Ranger also smacked the BBC after one of its sportscasters used the term “gay slap” to describe a somewhat wimpy punch thrown by a rugby player. Ten viewers who heard the comments by Brian Moore said the remark was offensive and reinforced stereotypes about gay people.  After a thorough investigation, the BBC sided with the protestors, saying the comment was “inconsistent with the BBC’s guidelines about avoiding hurtful or inaccurate stereotypes.

Now, to Reno, Nevada, where a mobile phone company committed the crime of using "non-standard English" and a wide-eyed black male in its billboard advertisements. The PC Ranger forced Nextel Communications to apologize for the ads which were geared toward teens and featured a black male asking “Where you at?” Critics said it exploits black youths and resurrects an ethnic form of slavery.

Finally -- to Florida, where the PC ranger found an offensive display in the governor’s office. A greeting card bears the image of the American flag with a cross instead of stars in the blue field. A Tallahassee photographer created the card for Gov. Jeb Bush in remembrance of Sept. 11.  But, the PC Ranger, Judith Schaeffer from People for the American Way, said a person who is Muslim, Jewish or some other faith "might feel like a second-class citizen" because of the display.

And so ends another exciting episode – but be sure to join us again next week when the PC Ranger rides again.
